St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino

    A resort in the valley

St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino sits on Mission Road, five minutes by car outside Cranbrook, in the East Kootenay valley. The resort is owned and operated by the Ktunaxa First Nation. Its 125 rooms and suites look out on the Hoodoos, the golf course and the mountains, including Fisher Peak. The building was once the St. Eugene Mission, a residential school for First Nations children of the region. The Ktunaxa Nation has reclaimed it.

Seasons shape a visit here. The championship golf course and the KOA RV park open April through October. The resort and casino stay open year-round, with casino hours kept on local Mountain time, the same clock as Alberta.

    The golf season

The championship course at St. Eugene was designed by Les Furber and runs beside rivers, with the Rocky Mountains behind it. It opens April through October, the same months as the KOA RV park on the grounds. Outside those months the course closes, but the rest of the resort does not. The hotel, the outdoor heated pool and the casino all stay open through the winter.

    Staying over

    Staying the night

Check-in at the hotel is at 4 pm, and check-out is at 11 am. Of the 125 rooms and suites, 25 are in the historic Mission building. Across the resort, rooms look out on the Hoodoos, the golf course and the Purcell or Rocky Mountains, Fisher Peak among them.

The outdoor heated pool is open year-round, and the resort also has hot tubs, a sauna and a fitness centre. Hotel guests get free WiFi. Some rooms are pet-friendly, so a pet can come along.

        Where to eat

Kiʔsuʔk k̓ikiⱡ, Ktunaxa for "good food", is the restaurant and bar raised above the casino floor. Its bar is open 11 am to 10:30 pm Sunday to Thursday, and to 12:30 am on Friday and Saturday. On Friday and Saturday the kitchen serves 11 am to 11 pm. From Sunday to Thursday it opens at 11 am; for a table after 10 pm, call 250-417-2772 first.

Numa Lounge & Dining sits in the Mission building, not inside the casino, and its name means "thunder" in Ktunaxa. It has views of Fisher Peak and the golf course. Breakfast is served every day, 7 am to 11 am. Wednesday to Sunday, dinner runs 5 pm to 9:30 pm, and the lounge is open 4 pm to 11 pm.

        Ktunaxa land and the Mission

Four Ktunaxa communities and the Kenpesq't (Shuswap Indian Band) own the resort together as St. Eugene Mission Holdings Limited. The casino opened in 2002. Two partners joined in 2004, Samson Cree Nation from Alberta and Rama First Nation from Ontario. On June 20, 2017, the four Ktunaxa communities again became the sole owners of the resort and casino.

Renovation began on April 8, 2019, and the casino reopened on July 19, 2019. Its 19,000 square feet use a nature-based design that honours the Ktunaxa Nation's connection to the earth. In the Mission building, the Ktunaxa Interpretive Centre, run by the Ktunaxa Nation Council, opens Monday to Friday 9 am to 4:30 pm. It is closed weekends, and tours must be booked in advance.

        Playing online in BC

PlayNow.com is run by BCLC and is the province's own online gambling site. It is the only legal online gambling site in British Columbia. The IGCO, the province's gambling regulator, says every other site that lets BC players in operates illegally in the province.

This guide carries paid links, marked Ad, on its home page. They lead to a private online casino that is not PlayNow.com and is not run or licensed by the province. A BC resident who plays there has none of the provincial protections. PlayNow limits and Game Break do not apply, and complaints cannot go to the IGCO. The partner pays the guide a commission and can change.
